
School board member Gallus Obert said he felt there wasn’t an alternative this year as the coronavirus pandemic has caused so many business closures and job layoffs.

The district reduced its reserve fund from more than $26 million to about $19 million to fund the budget without a tax increase. The budget passed unanimously at the June 24 meeting but in two additional measures concerning the tax rate, board members Amanda Geist and Constance Moore did not support keeping the tax rate at 220.14 mills, or $22.01 for each $100 of assessed property value. She was hired permanently to the post in January 2016. Samuel Lee, who left the district to become superintendent in Bensalem. Gehrens served as district supervisor of curriculum instruction before being named interim superintendent in 2015 to replace Dr. “Melanie, we’re looking forward to another five years of your wonderful leadership,” board chairman James Morgan said after the unanimous vote was taken. Her base salary will stay the same as it has been, $177,519, said district spokewoman Kellie Dietrich.

The contract for the superintendent will extend from July 2020 to June 2025. The Bristol Township School Board has given a new, five-year contract for Superintendent Melanie Gehrens as the board approved a $146.05 million budget calling for no tax increase.
